The City of Whittlesea Selects Workday to Transform People Experience

Melbourne Council Adopts Workday HCM as Single System for HR Management

Melbourne, Australia - July 14, 2025 -Workday, Inc. (NASDAQ: WDAY), a leading provider of solutions to help organisations manage their people, money, and agents, today announced that the City of Whittlesea, one of Melbourne’s fastest growing municipalities, has selected Workday Human Capital Management (HCM) to transform its employee experience.

This announcement marks Australia’s first council to select Workday as its HCM platform, quickly followed by Ipswich City Council in Queensland.

Located in Melbourne’s north, the City of Whittlesea is home to a diverse community of 240,000 residents, predicted to grow to more than 350,000 by 2040. The council plays a vital role in delivering a range of essential services, such as kerbside bin collections, support for young people, older adults and local businesses, and management of parks and open spaces, as well as providing the infrastructure needed to cater to this growing community. It employs more than 1,300 employees to manage and deliver these services.

The council focuses on working as one team to bring these critical services to the Whittlesea community. As part of this scope, it needed a consolidated HR system to streamline operations and achieve its goal of creating an irresistible employee experience. The City of Whittlesea selected Workday to replace seven disparate systems with a single, intuitive, and user-friendly system across the entire employee journey.

With Workday HCM, the council will:

  • Streamline operations. By consolidating its existing systems into one integrated system, the City of Whittlesea will streamline its operations and reduce administrative tasks. This approach will enhance organisational efficiency and free up valuable time for more strategic projects.
  • Strengthen workforce planning. With the ability to clearly see the entire employee lifecycle for the first time, the City of Whittlesea will strengthen recruitment, management, and retention of its most valuable resource – its people.
  • Improve data accuracy and reporting. The council will have a single source of truth across all people data, empowering the team to make data-driven decisions about its workforce, and simplify how it plans and adapts for the future.
  • Enhance data security and simplify compliance. With one consolidated system, the council will be better enabled to reduce risk and help ensure consistent protection of all employee data, while also automating compliance checks and documentation.

"The City of Whittlesea was looking to consolidate our people management systems and provide a seamless experience for our employees across recruitment, training and workforce planning. We wanted to improve the accuracy of our data and reporting functionality, to support better decision making and transparency, as well as enhanced productivity for our employees. We aim to make this a reality through our partnership with Workday,” said City of Whittlesea Chief People Officer Sharon Durantini.

"With the City of Whittlesea predicted to continue growing rapidly well into the future, it’s essential that its employees are equipped with the right tools to continue delivering essential services to residents, businesses, and the broader community,” said Jo-Anne Ruhl, vice president and managing director of Workday Australia and New Zealand. “The Workday platform is uniquely positioned to help empower government organisations of all sizes to adapt and thrive in the changing world of work. As the first council in Australia to officially select Workday for HCM, we are excited to see what the City of Whittlesea achieves and how it blazes a trail for other public sector entities."
